APMN contingent at the 2024 ACMC conference in Vietnam

The 2024 Asian Congress for Media and Communication (ACMC) Conference with the theme “Media Construct and Constructive media” was held from 31 October to 2 November at the Vietnam National University in Ho Chi Ninh City.

Vice-president, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Dr Lê Hoàng Dũng, welcomed participants to the event which was jointly hosted by ACMC and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities at Vietnam National University. 

Themes included technology, credibility and news content, visual language and media development, education and media cultures and the shifting paradigms in journalism.

In the opening ceremony, Associate Professor Azman Azwan Azmawati from Universitas Sains Malaysia officially stepped down from her role as ACMC president and passed the baton to associate Professor Smith Boonchutima from Chulalongkorn University. 
 
The conference keynote speaker, Professor Emeritus Jan Servaes, University in Leuven, Belgium, and former UNESCO Chair in Communication for Sustainable Social Change, discussed global issues that would require mass local participation to succeed and called on academics to spearhead projects that can initiate progress for sustainable change.
 
There were two speakers at the plenary session. Dr Namjoon Kang, dean, Graduate School of TESOL from Sookmyung Women’s University, Seoul, South Korea, spoke on “The use of Edutech in Teaching Language Communication”.
 
The second speaker, Professor Caja Thimm from University of Bonn, Germany enlightened participants on  “AI-Literacy in Education and the idea of ‘Technological Sovereignty’ as Educational Task”.
 
Khairiah A Rahman from AUT University and Dr Adam Brown, members of the Asia Pacific Media Network (APMN), presented a paper on APMN as an independent and constructive media. Khairiah also presented another paper on New Zealand media reportage on gun violence.

As this was the first physical conference after the covid pandemic, ACMC acknowledged AUT’s role as co-host in the virtual ACMC Conference in 2021. Khairiah A Rahman also received a certificate of commendation for her role as the 2021 conference convener which welcomed 110 participants from 12 countries.
 
The final programme recorded 109 panel sessions over the three-day conference and participants were treated to a sumptuous feast at the lavish conference dinner venue, Bách Việt, in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City. 
 
ACMC’s newly appointed president, Dr Boonchutima, thanked the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University. Dr Triệu Thanh Lê, dean, from the Faculty of Journalism and Communication, accepted the plaque of appreciation from Dr Boonchutima and thanked ACMC for the partnership.
 
Professor Rachel Khan, ACMC chair of the board, gave the closing address and announced that selected peer reviewed papers from the conference would be published in APMN's Pacific Media journal in 2025.
